Description
Medium perlite is a lightweight hard aerated white mineral formed from volcanic glass. It is commonly used in potting mixes to enhance drainage provide aeration to plant roots and retain oxygen moisture and nutrients from soluble fertilizers.
Finer to medium perlite is ideal for high-quality seed-starting mixes or rooting cuttings as its drainage properties promote rapid root development. It is particularly beneficial for succulents and orchids. Additionally medium perlite can be lightly spread across the surface of lawns where it will gradually work into the soil to improve drainage.
In seed-raising mixtures perlite facilitates quicker germination and enhances seedling growth. Seedlings can be easily removed from perlite with minimal root damage allowing for transplanting with little disturbance.
